Compounding

  • A large, skilled team of around 35 people
  • Responsible for creating the right medication for patients
  • All roles demand high levels of concentration and attention to detail

Housed in a carefully controlled environment, the compounding unit is made up of more than 35 people in a range of roles. These include administrators, stock controllers, disinfection specialists, qualified pharmacy assistants, compounding technicians, senior and chief technicians, dispensing technicians and compounding pharmacists. Each person is an integral part of the team and has a clear responsibility, whether it’s assembling raw ingredients, checking prescriptions or ensuring the integrity of the facilities. The unit handles more than 1,600 orders a month, mainly parenteral nutrition, chelation therapy, and cancer/chemotherapy.

Roles here are technically challenging and require high levels of concentration and attention to detail. You may be performing the same task time and again but you need to remain focussed. We have a lot of safety checks in place, but with people handling toxic and hazardous materials – not to mention preparing life-saving medication for patients – it’s important to maintain rigorous standards. That said, we have a very supportive, no-blame culture here, where we all share responsibility for ensuring things go right.
