Case study - patient

How did you find out it was possible to be treated at home?
My consultant saw that I had used my private medical insurance to pay for my initial scan. I had done this as it was more convenient than going through the NHS for it. He then gave me the option of homecare, so after some consideration I decided to have my treatment at home rather than in hospital.

Why did you decide to be treated at home instead of in hospital?
Homecare allows me to have my treatment in the comfort of my own home, so I am in familiar territory while I’m having it done. It also means I don’t have to travel several hours each way to and from the hospital.

What do you feel are the main advantages of having your treatment at home?
I don’t have to travel to the hospital which is 2-3 hours’ drive away, saving the cost of petrol and parking as well. As I’m being treated at home, I receive one-to-one care and the nurses are very accommodating, which means things like the times of my treatments are far less regimented.

How does the service impact on your quality of life?
I like the fact that I can have my treatment in the comfort of my own home. My treatment has been very well managed and my husband is able to be here whilst I have it done which is a great support.

How have you found the nursing team who are treating you?
They have been fantastic and are lovely. The one-to-one care is great as any concerns I have can immediately be answered and addressed.

Have you found any disadvantages to being treated at home?
No, none for me personally. I think some people like the camaraderie they have with other patients in the hospital so they might miss that if they have their treatment at home, but this has not affected me at all. I like the privacy of being at home.

Would you recommend Healthcare at Home and if so, why?
Yes definitely. I would recommend them as it has given me far more choice in my treatment, as well as offering far more flexibility than I would have if I was going in to hospital to be treated. Even the fact that the Healthcare at Home nurse comes and takes my pre-chemo bloods at home is a big bonus as it saves me going in to the local doctor’s surgery where I feel I could potentially be at risk of infection if my immune system is low.
Having my treatment at home has also given me a feeling of normality. My whole world changed overnight when I received my diagnosis, so with everything else changing around me, to be at home for my treatment is quite comforting.
